OT: properties of water?

Postby jimbo \(the lucky prophet\) on Mon Feb 08, 2010 11:47 pm

Can anyone help me out here. I was having a discussion with a mate about
water and the fact that it becomes more dense and heavier at freezing point.
There is a term for this and for the life of me I cannot recall the word.

Anyone?

Doesn't it become less dense?

Hence Ice floating?

Becomes less dense - i.e. icebergs

IIRC, water has the anomalous property of getting denser as it gets
cooler....down to 4 deg C. When water cools further, it's density then
decreases, hence ice floating on the denser cold water. The reason for this
is the crystallisation process that takes place when ice begins to form. I
must admit, I forget the more esoteric theoretical properties of water with
regard to supercooling etc.

do you know, a warm (ish) glass of water will freeze quicker than a cold
glass of water - when placed in the same
freezer - and i know this is true, because a man told it me, in a pub.

How can the same amount of water change weight if the mass is unchanged? I
assume that the water is not being taken off the planet.

When water freezes it expands due to the formation of hydrogen bonds this in
turn makes ice less dense than the surrounding water and the reason why it
floats. (mass = density x volume)
